We’ve got an exclusive interview.

Uilani do you think that for women, in particular, body confidence is still an issue?

Uilani Babe: I think body confidence for women is definitely still an issue. I think most women have some issue or another with their bodies and it’s saddening because the media chooses to usually portray a certain body type over others and it’s usually unattainable or expensive to obtain. It isn’t your average woman.

Do you feel that public perception of plus models and plus fashion has changed?

Uilani Babe: I do feel that public perception of plus models has changed. I think with more companies opening up to offer plus sizes we’re finally being able to wear the clothes we’ve wanted to and portray ourselves as we’d like. We’ve become more confident in ourselves and I think it’s rubbing off on those around us and those were perceived by.

What is your motivation for being a model/Influencer?

Uilani Babe: My motivation for being a plus-size model + influencer was to gain some confidence for myself. I started off just wanting to “fake it til you make it” in a sense. I was dealing with low self-esteem and I realized once I got dressed I felt a little better. I started posting my looks and then received an outpouring of support from women and men of all sizes. It really helped to see I was really just in my own head.

What do you hope will happen in the future for plus size models and their representation in the media?

Uilani Babe: I hope in the future plus size models are on TV more. I want to see us in the media, I want to see us represented in kind and beautiful ways. I want to see us being perceived as sexy. Curvy girls are everywhere I look, it should reflect in the media.

What would you say is your personal style?

Uilani Babe: My personal style is just whatever I feel sexy in. It’s really fluid and can change from day to day. Some days I just feel sexy in sweats and a tank top and that’s okay. Others it has to be a v-cut dress with a tapered waist and a slit. It depends on my mood and the occasion. I will say I always prefer to show my waist in my looks and it seems to be a highlight of myself people adore.

If you could change one fashion rule, what would it be and why?

Uilani Babe: I think fashion should have no rules. I can’t think of any that make sense it all just depends on the person and how they want to be perceived. New rule = No rules.

What has been the highlight of your career so far? Did you have an “I did it” moment?

Uilani Babe: The highlight of my career so far has been working with Fashion Nova Curve. I love my team, love the opportunities, and being invited to parties and events. I love how they’re so inclusive and how their selection of curvy items is so vast. It’s life-changing considering how few options we had just a few years ago.

What’s something surprising about plus-size modeling that people might not know?

Uilani Babe: I think something surprising about plus size modeling that a lot of people wouldn’t know is how much work we put into it! Looks are planned days or even months in advance. Another thing is how many clothes or items we accrue and end up donating! I’ve donated my entire wardrobe of at least 20x. We get so much stuff that it’s so easy to give it away. I know some people choose to sell it too because the majority of the items are unused and have only been worn for minutes to take a picture! I love donating them though.

How would you define the word “confidence”?

Uilani Babe: I would define the word confidence as the ability and courage to feel beautiful despite how you’re currently feeling.
