Katya, what is your motivation for being a model and Instagram Influencer?
Katya Karlova: A big part of why I began modeling is to deal with my body image issues. Growing up in the ’00s when “thin was in” I found it difficult to find my naturally curvy body beautiful. I always struggled with loving my body and developed body dysmorphia. Instead of dealing with my mental health issues, I pushed myself in my career and have been very successful as a talent executive and public speaker. I often wanted to cover up my body and made the excuse that I had to look “professional” and “conservative” to be taken seriously but I just didn’t feel comfortable in my skin. I had built a career out of helping people build their success stories professionally but in 2020 it was time to do the same for myself. It was during Covid that I finally had the time to get physically healthy, focus on eating healthy, whole foods ( I don’t believe in dieting but rather feeding your body truly nutritious fuel and being healthy from the inside out), develop a fitness routine and do some introspective work.
Pushing myself outside my comfort zone and getting my photos taken helped me see my body in a whole new light and it was life-changing, the body confidence helped me be confident in ALL areas of my life. That’s what being an influencer is to me, continue healing myself and hopefully helping others in the process.
What is the most important lesson you have learned as a model?
Katya Karlova: Modeling has helped me be free and comfortable in my skin in a way I never have before. It’s important to push yourself outside of your comfort zone but also remember your boundaries and make sure you don’t do things that make you uncomfortable in a way that violates your boundaries. It’s OK to say no, I don’t feel comfortable with that concept or a photographer for example.
What do you think of social media nowadays and how has it impacted your work?
Katya Karlova: Social media is an exciting thing! It’s very powerful and can be positive or negative. What’s great is that it’s whatever we want it to be and we have the power to bring awareness to positive things vs toxic ideas. Social media can be incredibly powerful to the body positivity movement which for me, is about recognizing beauty in all its forms and appreciating our unique differences without judgment. I say without judgment because that means accepting others as they are and not projecting our expectations of beauty on others.
What would you say is your personal style?
Katya Karlova: I’d say my style is more classic and chic, I stick to neutral tones and flattering cuts. I prefer my style to be timeless, and feminine with a hint of glamour.
What is your favorite product to wear?
Katya Karlova: I absolutely LOVE leather jackets and have them in many colors!
If you could change one fashion rule, what would it be and why?
Katya Karlova: I don’t think there are fashion rules anymore or if anyone thinks there are, there shouldn’t be! If you feel great, you’ll look great!
What has been the highlight of your career so far? Did you have an “I did it” moment?
Katya Karlova: For me, winning the UCLA Young Alumnus of the Year award was a huge professional achievement! It’s not something I share often but being honored for helping people succeed in their careers and recognized as a talent/ leadership expert and public speaker by my university made me feel like YES! I did it!
How would you define the word “confidence”?
Katya Karlova: Feeling truly comfortable in your body, mind, and spirit. Knowing you can handle whatever life throws at you!
Katya, you also like to travel, what is your favorite destination?
Katya Karlova: I love to travel and adventure and always have since I was a little kid! My favorite destination to date has been French Polynesia, the food, the water, and the friendly people made the trip so truly magical.
What are your must-haves when you travel?
Katya Karlova: I have a foldable Tumi tote bag that I love bc it’s perfect if you overbought some goodies and need an extra bag. I also bring a Barefoot Dreams cozy shawl/blanket thing so I can be cozy on the flight it’s a bit silly but I ALWAYS bring earplugs! I’m useless without a good night’s sleep so earplugs help if it’s city noise or even jungle noises!
