Her mission is to show that every woman is beautiful. So, we’ve got an exclusive interview.

Danielle, what does it mean to you to be a plus size model?

Danielle Lucker: Becoming a model was never something I thought possible as a child, never even crossed my mind because I was always bigger than my friends and dealt with body dysmorphia. It’s an honor to represent women with curvy bodies because it’s something I wish I could’ve seen more of growing up. I’m so thankful now that representation is becoming better in the fashion world. We’re seeing more diversity in race, size, age, and disabilities, but there is still a lot more to be done and I’m happy to be apart of it!

What is your motivation for being a model?

Danielle Lucker: It’s a funny story actually, but long story short, Ashley Graham! I was at a pool party a few years ago with women and men, almost everyone of both genders were thin and fit. I was the only plus size person. Then I was talking with some thin girls and one of them said to me “omg you are so pretty! You remind me of Ashley Graham” and looked me up and down and laughed. I said, “wow thank you, I LOVE Ashley Graham” and walked away from them. To me, this is a compliment because, hello Ashley Graham! I know she was trying to make me feel bad but honestly, that is what lit a fire in me and made me realize I could be a model! I signed with my agency 3 months later.

What do you hope will happen in the future for plus size models and their representation in the media?

Danielle Lucker: I hope that representation will continue to expand. I believe that we need more representation of different body types. We see mostly hour glass figures (which I would say I am part of that group) but we need to see other proportions, including more mid-sized people. Midsize is size 10-14 where they don’t necessarily fit a straight size or fit plus size. They make up a lot of women in society and I feel that they need better representation!

What would you say is your personal style?

Danielle Lucker: Growing up I never wore what I wanted because I never thought my body was good enough for it. I always told myself “once I lose 20 pounds THEN I can wear xyz!” It was a toxic thought cycle for a young girl. I think a lot of people can relate, unfortunately. Fashionista? Not yet at least haha. I am trying to expand my fashion style and express myself better through clothing. I don’t restrict myself of any clothing any more and it is so freeing! So, I hope every young person can see that they can wear anything, and it does not matter what your body looks like.

If you could change one fashion rule, what would it be and why?

Danielle Lucker: ‘Tall women shouldn’t wear heels’ I’m about 5’10 and I will rock a pair of heels, I feel powerful in heels so why would I stop wearing them!

How would you define the word “confidence”?

Danielle Lucker: Confidence to me is being true to yourself. When you are truly being the most authentic version of yourself I believe that is the most confident thing you can do! It’s easy to conform to society these days with social media, so to me, there’s nothing more confident then being exactly yourself and not caring about other opinions!

To our readers, Danielle wishes that everyone would realize their body does not determine their self-worth!
